School Background
Dr. Hughes completed her undergraduate education at Morgan State University and attained a Master of Science degree in Clinical Psychology from Alabama A&M University. Additionally, she earned the Philosophical Doctoral degree (Ph.D.) in Counselor Education and Supervision from The Chicago School of Professional Psychology. She completed post-graduate training at Mountain Lakes Behavioral Healthcare (MLBH) in Scottsboro, AL and at Huntsville Hospital (HH) Psychiatric Unit in Huntsville, AL. At MLBH and HH, she accrued the required clinical hours to obtain the License Professional Counseling (LPC) credential.

Experience
Dr. Hughes has experience with children, adolescents, adults, and the aging population (65+) using an integrated orientation of therapy that consists of wellness and humanistic-existential theory. Dr. Hughes utilizes empirically sound techniques and approaches in therapy, which include drawing exercises, life design, wellness measures, and learning style assessments. She uses a client-centered approach that intentionally considers the social and cultural identities of every client. Decision-making, life balance challenges, career/occupational/retirement stress, anger, chronic health issues that lead to experiences of depression and anxiety, low motivation, and low self-esteem are presenting problems that Dr. Hughes has experience with.

Professional Membership/Trainings
Dr. Hughes is currently (2019-2020) the President of the New Jersey Counseling Association and a Past-President of the Maryland and New Jersey Multicultural Counseling Associations. She is a member of the American Counseling Association (ACA), National Employment Counseling Association (NECA), Association for Multicultural Counseling and Development (AMCD), and the Historian for the North Atlantic Region of Counselor Education and Supervision (NARACES).

Wellness Counseling
From a holistic perspective grounded in humanistic-existential therapy, Dr. Hughes uses wellness counseling to address the multiple dimensions of a client and the problems they present. This approach and orientation to therapy allows for safe and accepting counseling which considers multi-contextual client identities in terms of community, family, work, environment, social relationships, race and ethnicity, age, gender and sexuality, economic status, and spirituality.

Clinical Supervision
Dr. Hughes has obtained the Approved Clinical Supervision (ACS) credential. The ACS is used to provide clinical supervision (CS) for associate level counselors and mental health professionals accruing hours required to obtain the Supervisory (-S) or ACS credential. She applies the collective of developmental and process models to provide CS, as it attends to supervisees’ needs in the becoming of an empathic, ethical, thoughtful licensed mental health professional.
